The EVBOOST project – “Development and Pilot Installation of Hybrid Electric Vehicle Charging Stations” (code ΕΚΠΑΡ01-0051999) is implemented under the Action “Research – Innovate” of the “Competitiveness” Programme, ESPA 2021–2027, co-financed by the European Union and national resources.

EVBOOST at a glance

EVBOOST started in November 2025 to develop and pilot a hybrid electric vehicle charging station. The solution is aimed mainly at areas where limited low-voltage grid capacity makes it hard to install fast chargers.

To accelerate sustainable mobility and remove barriers to electromobility, the project addresses the urgent need for reliable EV charging infrastructure along the national road network, aligning Greece with the European Alternative Fuels Infrastructure Regulation (AFIR) adopted in 2023.

Installing DC fast chargers currently faces significant challenges, including limited available power on the HEDNO distribution grid, the high cost of infrastructure upgrades, and instability caused by demand peaks. EVBOOST overcomes these barriers with smart systems that keep stations operating at the lowest possible cost, through two parallel technological approaches.

News from this semester

01

Market analysis and international standards

In the first semester, work began on mapping the Greek EV charging market and reviewing European and Greek standards. The analysis covers, among others, OCPP, OCPI, IEC 63119, OpenADR, IEC 62746 and ELOT 60364, so that the EVBOOST architecture is designed with clear interoperability and safety requirements.

02

Requirements and use cases

The consortium recorded the system’s initial functional and technical needs and formed realistic operating scenarios. This work will be used to define key performance indicators and to evaluate the pilot station in real-world conditions.

03

First steps on architecture and communications

At the end of the first semester, work began on the overall architecture and on requirements for the pilot installation in Northern Greece. In parallel, the project’s visual identity was defined and the first website mockups were produced; the site will be completed in the first months of the second semester.

What’s next

01

Finalising architecture and technical specifications

In the second semester, design of the EVBOOST architecture will continue, and technical specifications for the photovoltaic system, battery and chargers will be set. The results will form the basis for equipment design and implementation through M24.

02

Study and selection of the pilot site

Research for the pilot installation in Northern Greece will proceed based on technical, operational and permitting criteria. The final site will be chosen to support the planned tests of the hybrid station and evaluation of the project’s performance indicators.

03

Website completion and regular updates

The website will be completed in the first months of the second semester and will serve as the central point of information on EVBOOST progress, news and public materials. The consortium will publish updates each semester and make communication materials available in digital form.

The partners

As project coordinator, CLOCKWORK led requirements gathering, market analysis and the review of relevant standards. It also coordinated the first steps of architectural design and the study for the pilot installation.

OPTIMEMS contributed to the initial technical coordination and architecture design, with a focus on energy management system requirements, forecasting, optimisation and interoperability between subsystems.
